Author's Note: Digger's Diner was inspired by a real dog. I was sitting on Grafton Beach in Tobago and a friend noticed this black, stray dog digging frantically in the sand. Laughingly, we dubbed him "Digger". He actually did burst some children's beach ball too, just like in the story. He was so entertaining I thought, "Hmm, there's a story here waiting to be told." Within a couple weeks I penned the story of the dog who solved a crime and became so famous a restaurant on the beach was named after him! Teachers' Key (Ages 8-10): A part of Macmillan's Hop Step Jump series which moves on from stories told in simple sentences with basic grammatical structures to freer use of language, "Digger's Diner" is a fiction much like a Caribbean "Famous Five". Sample Conversation starters: What do you think about Pauley's parents to letting him skip school? The children in the story are from different countries. Children can interview someone who lives in a different neighbourhood even and explore the ways people are both similar and different. Digger was taken away to the pound for his digging. Children can visit a local animal shelter and discuss the issue of stray dogs. The CD: Produced and recorded in Trinidad at Audio Concepts Ltd. The author Joanne Johnson introduces Trinidadian actress Patti-Anne Ali who reads a lively and entertaining version of the many characters in Digger's Diner.
