Andy Campbell, author of Grommit, the Vulture

Born In Trinidad in 1945 and educated in Trinidad and England, Andy qualified as a commercial pilot in the UK, joined BWIA in 1966 and recently retired after 39 years.

He enjoyed telling stories to both sons and their friends throughout their childhood. Inspired by their enthusiasm and no longer having an audience once they had grown up, he started writing. Andy first self-published “Stories from the Cockpit” in 2001. It contained three short stories, with artwork and photographs from various sources, including some illustrations of his own. Some time after, Macmillan Caribbean purchased the rights to all three stories and have recently published their first, “Grommit the Vulture”.

Legend of St. Ann's Flood

Debbie Jacob,
author of Legend of St. Ann's Flood

Debbie Jacob is a journalist who teaches English and the Media and Ancient World history at The International School of Port of Spain. She earned a BA in Anthropology from Ohio State University and an MEd from Framingham University in Massachusetts. She has a weekly education column in the Guardian and she is currently completing a BA in history at OSU while working on an MPhil in Cultural Studies at UWI. She wrote the pioneering TV drama Sugar Cane Arrows. Although she was born in the US, she considers herself to be a true-true Trini. Legend of the St Ann¹s Flood is her first published book.

A Note from Joanne:
When I interviewed American born Debbie on camera for our SUN TV display at NALIS, I asked what brought her to Trinidad. She first heard of and fell in love with Trinidad through V.S. Naipaul's "Miguel Street" and had to see for herself if there was actually a real place with such colourful characters. "I've always wanted to be, not just an author, but a Trinidadian author," she explained. I was happy to include her in our display of Caribbean children's books, and in our Trini authors section even. To me she is Trini through love, if not by birth.
