Author's Note:
The writing of Sally's story began for me just as it begins in the book.
Each day I would see children in our Maraval community at the corner
standpipe. They bathe, collect water, wash cars, and laugh and play.
Hustling by in air conditioned cars, most Trinis grumble over the traffic
delays such corner activities often create.
Culturally, using the standpipe spells an economic situation which may be
pitied or looked down upon. Although that has not been my direct experience, I do know
the joy of prancing around under the gushing eaves during a good rainfall or
of just playing in the garden hose. While I consider seriously the
inconvenience and difficulty of not having running water, I also admire the
community spirit of simple living .
