In 2006, anywhere in the world, if you REALLY want to connect
with people, if you really want to enliven a community; if you
really want to say something significant or memorable there's really
only one thing to do: MAKE A MOVIE For corporate sponsors this is a
time for far more than cutting ribbons and flowery speeches
delivered from podiums. Breaking the long standing expectation that
local television is boring, that documentaries are 'serious' or
'dull', SUN TV aims to surprise viewers with its creative /
journalistic integrity as well as its feel good entertainment.
Between November 2005 and January 2006 Joanne wrote/ directed and
produced : THE JOURNEY NOW START...

"ADAMANTLY LOCAL PROGRAMMING...A GUERILLA VIDEO VERSION OF HOGANS HEROES
CREATING ROOTS PROGRAMMING BEHIND ENEMY LINES."
Mark Lyndersay, Trinidad Express

"The Sun TV studio is a small unassuming brick building used by Cableview as
their earthstation. There's something terribly ironic about
this adamantly
local programming being produced in the middle of this satellite farm, the
bank of winking lights on a rack near the western wall of the 'studio'
beaming dozens of channels of foreign content into northern Trinidad. It
makes this already motley crew seem even more like a guerilla video version
of "Hogans Heroes" creating roots programming behind enemy lines."
- Mark Lyndersay, Bit Depth The Trinidad Express, Saturday, November 23, 1996 Here's what viewers had to say about
SUN TV community programming (1996- 1998):
"Refreshing. I'm up all night because
I'm so happy to see we ting and we people on the air."
"It's about time!! It's fun and thoughtful at the same time. A venture well
worth supporting. I can't get enough of SUN TV."

STAY TUNED FOR MORE SUN TV.....
IN THE WORKS: Television for Caribbean
Children, and Caribbean television for Children
SUN TV LTD. aims to be universal through creating media projects that are:
* Caribbean-specific: in any combination
of content, form and unseen resources of production
* Contemporary-timeless: exploring our
present day reality beyond stereo-types of "fetish" or nostalgic Caribbean,
and with a view to creating a timeless product
* Family-friendly: Fun for as wide a
range of ages and ethnic groups and individual interests as possible
* "Organically" produced: Our process
honors and respects existing cultures, both the communities and individuals(
with the same respectful attitude that environmentalists approach nature);
simplicity and kindness first, technology second.
Between 1996 and 1998 Joanne established SUN TV LTD. Her first goal was to
practically demonstrate the possibilities open to developing local
television, and to offer one such model.
It was a revolutionary experiment in the mass production of creative,
entertaining television media using the restrictions of minimum resources:
volunteer crew services and domestic equipment.
Relying only on good ideas, and three committed crew, SUN TV LTD was able to
disseminate over that two year period using unwanted air time of Cableview's
Barker Channel, and overnight on TTT, over 700 hours of local community,
arts and entertainment television.
"I was convinced, and still am, that at this stage of our development,
quality must include quantity, " Explains Joanne. " We need to see and hear
ourselves and position our products in a 'mediascape' of our own sights and
sounds. I believe it is as essential and as inevitable as God. Our corporate
citizens will 'get it'. It's just a matter of time. Some generations plant,
others reap. I am simply doing my part in that process."

Some
brief history and information on Joanne Johnson
Joanne's interest in television began with her
involvement in the pilot production of Magic Rainbow (1989) with
Dani Jeffery's Gemini TV, (Producer of the local drama series
Sugar Cane Arrows).
"As a classroom teacher I saw that children remembered that
Christopher Columbus landed in Trinidad in 1498 when they stick
a feather in a hat and act out the drama of such situations. I
began to resent the confinement of a system relying on the
efficiency and convenience of zooming though a syllabus with
only black board and chalk to bring theories to life. Theater In
Education projects became a passion for me."
Having first apprenticed to Lorna MacKay in 1983-1985, Joanne
began her own children's theater company "The Hamelyn Players".
"Our workshops focused on process. Any formal performance
presentation evolved out of our work or it didn't, " Joanne
laughs. "If we saw something develop we invited parents in to
have a look. My primary concern was to build the confidence and
self-esteem of the kids, not to put on plays."
In 1990 Joanne wrote, directed and produced a play about the
national bird of Trinidad, the scarlet ibis which is illegally
hunted; soon to be a book
"Ibis Stew? Oh No!" (also by Macmillan).
"I'm very excited about the book. As a play it was educational,
fun and interactive. The teacher-actors encouraged involvement
from the kids in the audience. We played to schools in
Port-of-Spain and also to one at The Wild Fowl Trust" in
Pointe-a-Pierre. The scarlet ibis are being bred there in order
to rehabilitate the population in the wild."
From 1992 Joanne left teaching and apprenticed as a television
producer to the late Dale Kolasingh of the then, AVM Television,
(now TIC). She co-hosted Good Morning Trinidad and Tobago and
produced the Midday Show which was live. She also scripted and
produced a number of specials and documentaries including Rights
From the Heart ( for UN's International Broadcasting Day for
Children) and "Head Start" a preparation programme for Common
Entrance (now SEA) students.
In 1994 Joanne conceived and co-created Caribbean Sports Digest
for Tony Harford of All Sport Promotions, which went on to be
seen in 20 countries around the region. Many of the "best" in
video and television production in
Trinidad today, developed and recognized their talent while
working on CSD.
