Author's Note:
When I wrote "The Scottish-Island Girl", I decided to stay true to some
extent, to the person and place that inspired the story. I had spent a
weekend at Grande Rivere with Lizzy and her family. It interested me that
the children complained on the long drive there, only to be spontaneously
converted by the wild beauty of the lush landscape. In no time locals and
foreigners, children and adults alike were relaxed, playful and at one with
it all.
Teachers' Key (Ages 7-9):
A part of Macmillan's Hop Step Jump series which moves on from stories told
in simple sentences with basic grammatical structures to freer use of
language, " The Scottish-Island Girl" offers a spring board for other
lessons and discussions: Geography (Trinidad & Scotland); Social Studies:
comparing cultures, sea bathing safety issues and wild life preservation.
The CD:
Produced and recorded in Trinidad at Audio Concepts
Ltd. The author Joanne Johnson narrates, and authentic voices bring the
characters and story to life. Lizzy is not read by the original Lizzy, since
she is a teenager now and living once again in the UK.
