EVER SEEN A PET
VULTURE?
Read
about Grommit the Vulture
I had heard that Grommit was a remarkable bird so rather than just take photos of him I decided to take along my video camera as well – and I’m glad I did! Firstly, had I not shot the evidence on video, no one would have believed me when I talked about how Grommit drank tea, took a shower, brought his cobeaux friends to meet me and went for a walk with us – on foot ! Secondly, as an Illustrator I like to have ‘Authentic’ material to work from so that I can get a genuine feel for the subject matter I am covering. Especially in this case, it was important for me to understand Grommit by way of having visuals to help me later on when I was working on the book ‘Grommit the Vulture’. A video study in this case was extremely useful in allowing me to have reference material to work with while I was illustrating in Spain. I was able to be loyal to the subject, faithful to the author’s story and the place where it originated, as well as it gave me a solid base from which I could later use my creative licence to experiment with. After having had the experience of getting so close as to video this wonderful creature, I must say I am not able to see birds as I once did. These creatures are intelligent beings, with what seems like the capacity to interact with humans much in the same way as dogs or cats. I shall not forget how he looked at me through my camera lens or how he interacted lovingly with Barbi Jardine, the lady who found him as a baby. In the end I am left with a video that was inspiring to both the artist and the personal Vee within.
